Sonic Drilling

About M&W’s Sonic Drilling Services

Sonic drilling uses high-frequency vibration to advance and case a borehole at the same time. The vibration reduces friction between the tooling and the soil, allowing the drill to move smoothly through mixed or unstable ground. It produces high-quality core samples with very little surface disturbance

Sonic drilling delivers continuous core recovery, minimal borehole disturbance, and significantly reduces investigative-derived waste compared to conventional drilling methods.

Both sonic drilling and wireline rock coring collect rock core, but the sample quality is very different.

Sonic drilling uses vibration and rotation, and the vibration energy typically fractures the core into short, disk-shaped sections similar to hockey pucks.

Wireline rock coring uses significantly faster, controlled rotation without vibration, producing continuous, virtually undisturbed core that is far better for detailed geotechnical and engineering analysis.
